I hope you enjoy these short vignettes. Some of them started as writing excercises, while others are the seed of a possible future story.

All of these live somewhere between writing practice and story. Enjoy!

What is... Spring?

Spring metaphors about spring, overcommittment, and patience.

Written in 2004. I wrote the Spring metaphors to practice the art of showing. We used to make one liner “What is…” metaphors for our high school literary arts magazine, and I always enjoyed reading what different writers came up with.

What You Seek is on the Top Shelf

All the signs were there when they emptied the pickle case.

Written in 2004. "What You Seek is on the Top Shelf" is just a bit of crazy fun!

She still smelled of lavender…

Written in 2002. My favorite of these vignettes is "Lavender and Tears" which is the closest to being a short story because of the tension and character interaction.

The miller's daughter broke his heart.

Written in 2002. "Rumpelstiltskin's Last Word" is a more atmospheric piece, playing with point of view.

Meet Evelyn Page, the world's first human clone.

Written in 2002. "Press Conference from the Hospital" explores characterization and plot.
